About The Screen Guardians

Protecting and Preserving Childhood in the Digital Age

We’re parents, educators, and advocates who believe every child deserves to grow up — not just grow up online.

Screen Guardians founder with family — digital wellness education for kids and schools

Our Story

This started as a mom moment. It became a movement.

I always thought I had a pretty good handle on the digital world my kids were living in. I teach this stuff. I write school programs on this stuff. I talk about digital health for a living.

Then I looked at one of my kids’ group chats.

Reality check received.

“Nothing will give you a reality check faster than actually seeing what your kids are navigating online — and realizing they’re doing it alone.”

That’s when The Screen Guardians was born — not from a corporate office or a research lab, but from a kitchen table, a mother’s worry, and the deep belief that education is the greatest form of protection.

We’ve since testified before state legislatures, built K–12 programs launching across multi-state school networks, and created a community where thousands of parents and educators finally feel like they’re not doing this alone.

And we’re just getting started.

We are not here to scare you.

We are here to equip you.

Grounded in research, not fear. Built for families and schools — not headlines.

What We Believe

Our Core Convictions

Everything we build — every program, every resource, every conversation — flows from these five beliefs.

Education Over Restriction

Removing screens doesn’t solve the problem. When kids understand why their brain responds to technology, they become more curious — not just compliant.

“Rules without understanding often breed rebellion.”

Shared Responsibility

Digital health is not a solo parenting problem. It requires alignment between home, school, and community — all speaking the same language.

“Influencing a community enhances learning and increases impact.”

Connection Over Control

The goal is not surveillance or punishment. It’s partnership — between parent and child, family and school, school and community.

“A dysregulated child doesn’t need more control. They need more connection.”

Brain Science, Plain Language

Dopamine loops. Prefrontal cortex development. Algorithmic design. These concepts belong in every household — explained in words real people actually use.

“When students understand the system, shame decreases and agency increases.”

Hope, Not Fear

The digital world is not going away. The goal is to raise kids who can thrive in it — not hide from it. We choose hope. Every time.

“Not anti-technology. Pro-child.”

1 Mission

Protect and preserve childhood in the digital age

Our Team

Real Expertise. Real People.

The Screen Guardians team brings together subject matter experts from the fields that matter most when it comes to raising kids in a digital world.
Healthcare — understanding the physical and developmental impact of screen exposure
Brain Health Education — translating neuroscience into language families can actually use
Mental Health — addressing anxiety, addiction patterns, and emotional regulation
Cybersecurity — teaching kids and parents to recognize and respond to online risks
Law Enforcement — grounding our safety content in what's actually happening out there

We’re in it with you.

We don’t just research this. We live it. Our founder has personally navigated screen battles, group chats, and the heartbreak of watching kids get pulled under by technology designed to hold them.

She has testified before state legislatures. Written school programs. Spoken to thousands of parents who said the same thing she once felt:

“I don’t know how to handle this. And I feel completely alone.”

That ends here.

Founder & Educator

Katie Longhauser, RN, BSN

Katie Longhauser is the founder of The Screen Guardians — a mother of three, a registered nurse, and an educator who has spent more than a decade researching how technology shapes children’s developing brains, mental health, and relationships.

Her path to this work began at her own kitchen table. Watching how easily screens slipped into childhood without guidance or a roadmap, Katie set out to build the resource she wished existed for her own family. What started as personal research grew into a movement. Today, The Screen Guardians serves schools, parents, and communities nationwide through a K–12 program, the Parent Portal, and the Screen Guardians Podcast.

Drawing on her healthcare background and years of classroom-tested education, Katie translates complex topics — brain science, dopamine loops, online safety, and the real mental health stakes — into plain language parents and kids can actually use. She has been featured on NPR, advocated before state legislatures, and built a team of experts in healthcare, mental health, cybersecurity, and law enforcement.

She’s not here to scare anyone. She’s here to equip them.

Susan Dunaway, LCPC

Susan Dunaway began her career as a therapist in the late 1990s and has spent decades helping individuals improve their mental health and well-being. In 2013, she became certified in neurofeedback, deepening her expertise in brain-based approaches to mental health care. She later co-founded Amend Neurocounseling, where she practiced from 2016 to 2024.

Over the course of her work, Susan became increasingly aware of the growing impact of technology on her clients’ mental and neurological health. This concern was reinforced through her neurofeedback sessions, where she could directly observe changes in brainwave activity associated with screen use. These experiences led her to begin speaking and educating others about the effects of screen time on brain health.

As technology continues to shape daily life, Susan remains committed to researching its influence and sharing practical, evidence-informed insights with individuals, families, and communities.

Susan is married to John, a former educator who now works in the corporate sector. They have two young adult sons and share their home with two energetic dogs—a squirrel-chasing mutt and a ball-loving Goldendoodle.

At The Screen Guardians, we’re not here to sound the alarm or tell you to go screen-free forever. We’re here to walk with you—parents, educators, and community leaders—toward a more conscious, informed, and connected relationship with the digital world.

We bring together neuroscience, real-world law enforcement, and years of hands-on family work to grow something bigger than awareness. We build safety, agency, and lasting change.

Because our kids don’t just need protection.
They need preparation.
